Fingerprints

Fingerprint evidence can be one of the best forms of evidence for linking a person to a particular item of evidence. Fingerprint evidence comes in three forms:

• Latent: Latent fingerprints are ones that are not readily visible without some sort of processing. Processing can include the use of light energy, application of powders, or the use of chemicals.
• Patent: Patent fingerpritns are ones that are readily visible without any enhancement. These prints can include ones in blood, grease, or oil. Patent prints are generally documented through photography. Even though patent prints are readily visible, enhancement through light energy or chemicals will often bring up more detail.
• Plastic: Plastic prints are three-dimensional impressions in substances such as putty, soap, or cheese.
